Manish Malhotra has redefined and modernised costumes in Indian cinema. His repertoire includes designing for Bollywood stars, styling them, a diffusion range, bridal and couture. Manish is best known for his bridal wear, and his styling. His strong sense of colour and occasion have made him the first choice of some of the most striking personalities in the Indian film industry, high profile politicians, industrialists, top global corporates and affluent families across the globe.
Manish Malhotra started his career as a model, while studying at the Elphinstone College in Mumbai. He revolutionized costume designing and introduced the concept of styling in Bollywood after his first film as a designer for Juhi Chawla starrer Swarg over two decades ago.
The designer made his inroads with Bollywood and became one of the most recognized names in the fashion industry globally. Manish clearly marked his foothold in the fashion industry by winning the first Filmfare Costume Award for the film Rangeela.
In 1998, Manish decided to venture into mainstream designing with his high-profile couture store ‘Reverie - Manish Malhotra’. With this launch, he further received a tremendous response and the most striking personalities in the Indian film industry and affluent families across the globe became his clients. Manish also created waves and received immense appreciation for creating glamorous ensembles with Indian traditional colours, craftsmanship, textures and embroideries at his first fashion show in November 1999.
Manish rocked the international fashion circle when he designed for Michael Jackson when he visited India. He has also styled Jean-Claude Van Damme, Reese Witherspoon in Mira Nair’s Vanity Fair, Kylie Minogue and for Jermaine Jackson and wife Halima. Manish has also styled and designed for brides and bridegrooms all over the world, giving them something out-of-the-world for their big day.
Across 25 years of his career Manish has received over 35 awards and designed looks for over 1000 films. He has been felicitated by National Institute of Fashion Technology, Delhi; with the Rajiv Gandhi Award by the Mumbai Pradesh Youth Congress 2002 and the Indo American Society for his contribution to fashion design. Bollywood also bestowed Manish with many awards and acclaims for creating magic with his costumes, his distinct style and his ability to envision a look for the character in films like Rangeela, Raja Hindustani, Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Mohabbatein, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and many more.
Manish went on to become the most sought after Bollywood designer and has dressed the most glamorous women in the industry like Kajol, Karisma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Rani Mukherji, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Preity Zinta and many more. He has showcased his collections not only in Fashion Weeks in India but also across the globe. Manish’s hard-work is resonated with having the reputation of showcasing the highest number of shows in the fashion fraternity.
Besides Films and Fashion, Manish Malhotra believes in spreading the arena of design to various aspects. One such effort was designing the team gear for Shah Rukh Khan’s Indian Premier League team KOLKATTA KNIGHT RIDERS. Manish has also combined fashion and hospitality by styling for upmarket leisure properties in Mumbai and New York.
Manish Malhotra has successfully maintained the delicate balance between designing for films, as well as haute couture. Manish has taken Indian clothes to the international level and promoted Indian culture globally through extensive use of rich Indian fabrics, designs and embroidery.
In the past one year, Manish has taken up the responsible initiative to promote regional handicrafts and workmanship from rural India. One such initiative is his association with the ‘Mijwan Welfare Society.’
Besides spreading his magic on the ramp, Manish is also an influencer and opinion maker in the social media world with over 1 million ‘likes’ on Facebook and 6 lakh followers on Twitter.
